Trump's Manhattan hush money trial

NewsMedia18:-

A man sets himself on fire outside a Manhattan courthouse during the hush-money trial of former President Donald Trump. Police said the man doused himself in the liquid before tossing the conspiracy-theory pamphlet in the air.

His motive is unknown and police responded to the scene. Mr Trump was in the building to attend jury selection, where he had a security detail, but the former president left during the incident.

Emergency officials said there was no breach of court security in the incident. The case, which had just completed alternate jury selection, resumed later in the afternoon. Opening statements are expected to begin Monday.

At a press conference, investigators said they received an emergency call to 911 at around 13:30 local time (18:30 BMT) saying a man had set himself on fire.

They identified him as Maxwell Azzarello, 37, who arrived in New York from his home in Florida last week. He has no criminal record in New York, and his family in Florida did not know he had traveled to the city.

New York Police Chief Jeffrey Madre said Mr. Azzarello was seen "moving around" in the park before reaching for a bag containing flammable liquids and pamphlets. The pamphlets were "propaganda-based," Chief Madre said, adding that they were related to a "conspiracy theory."

There was a large police presence outside the courthouse due to the trial, and officers quickly rushed to the park yelling for fire extinguishers. Mr. Azzarello was carried away on a stretcher, his body badly burned. He was taken to the hospital's burn center in a critical condition, police said.

Eyewitness Julie Berman told reporters: "It was hot, and it didn't make much sense. The whole thing happened so fast... It took me like 20 seconds to realize what was going on."

NYPD investigators later appeared to collect pamphlets that Mr. Azzarello had distributed before killing himself. They found the area safe.

Investigators are still interviewing witnesses and say he didn't want to say anything before setting himself on fire. Three NYPD officers and a court officer suffered minor injuries after helping put out the fire.

Officials said they will now reassess security outside the courthouse.
